While it’s never too late to learn an instrument, a common refrain is ‘I wish I’d learnt to play when I was younger’, and there are certainly advantages to be gained from starting early.
Instilling a sense of rhythm, harmony and an understanding of music notation from a young age is hugely beneficial - like languages, these are harder to pick up later on.
Learning an instrument also:
- Exercises memory skills
- Improves coordination and reading skills
- Nurtures listening skills, self confidence and self expression
- Teaches discipline, patience and the importance of practise
... and, most importantly, it's fun!
